About the Job

As a development finance institution, CDC has a dual mandate to create both investment and development impact. In the context of CDCs new 2022-21 five-year strategy, CDC has prioritised promoting gender equality and increased representation of women in our portfolio at all levels as well as Black ownership and leadership in our investments in sub-Saharan Africa.

We approach our Gender & Diversity lens investing by focusing on three pathways:

  • Mainstreaming consideration of diversity elements as a core factor in investment decision-making and portfolio management
  • Originating with a gender and diversity lens to intentionally target our capital to enterprising, financial institutions and funds that meaningfully support women and Black business leaders.
  • Value creation across our portfolio by partnering with our investees to make changes to improve gender balance and diverse representation across the business, particularly in senior leadership.

The Role

This job description relates to the duties, tasks and responsibilities of the Gender & Diversity Finance Executive position – the weighting of which may change over time. These will vary to some extent depending on activities and evolving priorities across the Gender & Diversity Finance team and will, of necessity, remain flexible as workplans evolve. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who is highly collaborative and innovative in nature, be a strong communicator and have an interest in how the private sector can drive impact CDC’s markets and portfolio. The candidate will ideally come from a commercial background with expertise across gender, finance/business and sustainability more broadly.

Responsibilities

Implementing CDC’s gender strategy and managing cross-cutting projects will involve working closely with both investment and impact teams. With the investment teams (Infrastructure and Climate and/or SMART funds) you will be working on transaction management engaging with pipeline investments to support building gender finance into the investment process. With the impact teams (Climate, ESG, CDC Plus and Development Impact) you will be working across a variety of gender value creation-related opportunities ranging from building in-house capacity within investees, designing gender lens investing tools and training materials, managing a pipeline of gender-based projects and maintaining ongoing gender strategic partnerships and grant funding allocated from CDC’s technical assistance facility, CDC plus.

Core responsibilities of the Executive include (but are not limited to):

  • Transaction management
  • Support the investment process through working closely with both impact and investment teams to help identify, articulate and monitor the gender & diversity case across the investment lifecycle using the 2X criteria framework
  • Value creation project management
  • Identify opportunities for in-depth technical assistance projects to support investees to make positive changes in their business to promote gender balance across the business or or racial equity in leadership. Oversee procurement and project management for these projects across a range of topics (e.g., recruiting and talent management, skills development, product design and development, etc)
  • Internal Gender Finance Working Group admin/support
  • Maintain portfolio tracking systems
  • Provide reporting inputs to CDC’s Gender & Diversity Finance Steering Committee, ExCo, Board
  • Lead special projects (TA, cross-firm, research)

The Candidate

Skills and Experience

The ideal candidate will have all or a good selection of the following:

  • Significant professional experience in finance, business operations, impact investing or international development (experience in emerging markets preferred)
  • MA in relevant field preferred
  • Strong private sector and/or investment experience, ideally in relation to gender equality preferred
  • Strong business, investment and sustainability acumen with the ability to quickly grasp varying investment and business models
  • Previous experience working in international development or emerging markets or demonstrable knowledge working within local contexts and having cultural sensitivity
  • Sector experience in infrastructure, climate finance, private equity or venture capital funds a plus
  • Experience designing and implementing technical assistance programmes in developing countries for private equity or private sector
  • Excellent listening and facilitation skills and an ability to deliver impact across matrix-based organisations
  • Excellent quantitative and qualitative research skills and ability to structure and report findings in a coherent and practical way
  • Very strong project management experience including setting up systems and embedding new processes into existing operations

Technical competencies

The ideal candidate will have all or a good selection of the following:

  • Advanced MS Excel, PowerPoint, Word, SharePoint
  • Understanding of the IFC Performance Standards
  • Understanding of the 2X Criteria/2X Challenge/2X Collaborative
  • IMC, CFA, ACA or similar
