Investments Technical Lead

at Connect Humanity in Global

About the Job

About us: Connect Humanity is a fund advancing digital equity. We support, catalyze, and scale holistic solutions providing people with the internet access and means needed to participate fully in a digital society. Our work centers on the 3.6 billion people who are currently disconnected from the online world and equal opportunity to essentials like financial security, education, and healthcare. We advance our mission by making philanthropic grants, providing low interest loans, advocating for policy change, conducting research, and supporting a community of practice dedicated to connecting the unconnected backed by the capital to do so.

Our expert team blends a deep knowledge of connectivity policy and technology with decades of experience managing multimillion-dollar philanthropic programs and global investments. We focus on the financial realities of this massive and multifaceted problem, offering support when, where, and how it is needed. Alongside our partners, we take a holistic approach to achieving digital equity, supporting projects in five interrelated areas:

  • Infrastructure: Supporting, catalyzing, and scaling non-traditional operators to meet the needs of underserved communities and expanding access to devices.
  • Affordability: Highlighting best practices and de-risking financing and business models to connect the unconnected, pioneering blended capital models to sustainably support network builds, and investing in technology at key points in the connectivity stack to reduce the cost of building networks.
  • Digital Skills: Innovating in delivering digital literacy at scale while increasing the pipeline and community of network engineers working in the public interest.
  • Locally Relevant Content: Developing and sharing best practices in scaling the production of locally relevant content, which is a critical incentive to use the internet.
  • Policy: Building grassroots power and advocating for changes to accelerate the rate at which people are connecting.

About the role: We are looking for an Investments Technical Lead to support the identification and evaluation of digital equity investment opportunities. This role is a key member of our organization’s investment team, reporting to the Chief Investment Officer, and will play a pivotal role in assessing connectivity projects and non-traditional operators for investment readiness.

Due diligencing the technical design of potential connectivity investments

  • Leading the technical due diligence process, including assessing the optimality and feasibility of network architectures (design, modality), providing strategic guidance and critical feedback for plans that are not yet investment ready
  • Analyzing the pros and cons of various owner-operator models, supporting communities in making informed decisions given their context
  • Evaluating the implications of connectivity plans on implementation needs, including build out sequence and construction requirements
  • Understanding key drivers for network success, including community engagement and buy-in for network design and business model, digital literacy skills, etc

Building Connect Humanity’s pipeline of investment opportunities, and network of non-traditional operators and communities seeking to advance digital equity

  • Cultivating relationships with various connectivity partners and non-traditional operators, including providers involved with engineering, construction, middle mile, ISPs, etc
  • Sourcing investment opportunities that advance digital equity, including innovating new partnership models
  • Supporting communities seeking to advance digital equity in navigating complex stakeholder situations and design decisions

Supporting the financial analysis of business plans for connectivity projects and non-traditional operators

  • Understanding the implications of relevant federal, state, and local regulations and funding opportunities on Connect Humanity’s investment case
  • Developing and communicating the investment case, including analyzing the impact of underlying assumptions and sensitivities on project cashflows
  • Supporting the investment process, including structuring and negotiating key terms, and post-investment management, including monitoring progress of connectivity projects

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage interns, consultants, and vendors on projects furthering organizational goals overseen by the office of the CIO.
  • Represent the organization in certain national and international forums.

Education and Experience: We’re open to a number of different backgrounds for this role, and would strongly encourage members of underrepresented communities to apply. • Experience in evaluating various owner/operator models, technical assets and modalities (fiber, wiress, etc), including implications of dark fiber, geography, potential anchor institutions, other un/under-utilized digital assets on optimal network design

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with various business models for middle and last mile connectivity, key drivers of network revenue and cost models, and capex for digital infrastructure
  • Critical thinker with a can-do approach to problem solving, disaggregating large/complex problems to identify underlying drivers and critical nuances
  • Comfort with ambiguity and managing workload given shifting and/or competing priorities
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including communicating complex topics in simple, direct language
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-culturally with collegiality, humility, and respect
  • Open to domestic and international travel when it is safe to do so
  • Collaborative approach to engaging communities and key stakeholders that support Connect Humanity’s mission and programs

  • Understanding of blended finance and/or impact investment financing vehicles (e.g., guarantee, PRI, impact bonds, project financing, outcomes-based, etc)
  • Exposure to investment due diligence and transaction processes
  • Comfort in conducting complex analysis using tools like Excel, GIS, and various network planning tools.

Organizational Relationships:

  • This position will report to the Chief Investment Officer.
  • The position will be in regular contact with the senior leadership team and direct reports through the planning and execution of duties.

Physical Demands:

Connect Humanity is an impact fund advancing digital equity. We support, catalyze, and scale holistic solutions providing people with the internet access and means needed to participate fully in a digital society. Our approach centers on non-traditional operators and civil society organizations who are demonstrating progress in connecting historically underserved communities, pioneering efforts to make the internet more affordable, providing digital literacy training, and more. What we hear time and again is that they lack access to the capacity and capital to meet the needs in their communities. That’s why our model focuses on meeting these non-traditional operators where they are, assessing the needs of the communities they serve, and providing a range of financial tools to help them holistically and sustainably achieve digital equity.
