Director, ChangeWorks Organizational Development Practice, Advisory Services (Washington, DC, San Francisco, CA, Chicago, IL, Durham, NC, New York, NY)

A mission-driven professional who will provide strategic consulting services to a diverse portfolio of non-profit and philanthropy clients to help them build thriving organizations through organizational development and operational planning.

The ChangeWorks practice at Arabella Advisors centers on providing foundations, nonprofits, and other mission driven organizations support in building people practices, systems, processes, and structures that ensure they are operating effectively and can deliver the greatest impact to the field. The Director of ChangeWorks will work closely with the Senior Director to manage consulting engagements focused on organizational design and operational planning for a range of clients, including foundations, family and individual philanthropists, and nonprofits. The Director will support project work for the practice, applying their expertise and knowledge to coach Arabella’s more junior practitioners and ensure we are meeting a consistently high standard of quality. We seek someone with a passion for professional services, an organizational development mindset, some experience working in nonprofits or foundations, and strong writing and facilitation skills.

Total Rewards (compensation and benefits)

This is a Full Time position. We offer a competitive and holistic total rewards package that includes salary, bonus, and benefits. Our base salaries are based on a blend of similar sized organizations from different sectors, including nonprofits, foundations, and professional service firms. They are also based on local market rates and differentiated by geography. 

All full-time staff are eligible for our generous benefits package on their first day of employment:

While this position must be based in Washington, DC, San Francisco, CA, Chicago, IL, Durham, NC, New York, NY. Please note that due to COVID-19, all Arabella Advisors' offices are closed, and we continue to temporarily work in a remote environment.

When we reopen -- currently anticipated in early 2022 -- we will be returning to work with a hybrid workplace strategy to ensure continued flexibility for our staff, while deepening our strong culture rooted in collaboration and in-person interactions between colleagues. It is our expectation that once we reopen, Arabellans will generally work 2-4 days per week from the office and 2-4 days at home/remotely. Qualifications

Essential Responsibilities

Client Service (~50-65%)

Project Management & Oversight: Serve as senior strategist or project manager on complex client projects ensuring client deliverables, client meetings, and presentations meet or exceed client expectations; specific duties will vary based on the type of project but are likely to include:

  • Developing and managing project scopes
  • Developing and managing project teams
  • Designing and facilitating high-quality working sessions with clients and other stakeholders
  • Leading client meetings clearly communicating project progress and findings and facilitating decision making
  • Identifying and leading opportunities for renewal or scope expansion

Ensuring a project remains on time and on budget

  • Developing high-quality reports and presentations, including overseeing or leading the research and analysis process leading up to deliverable development
  • Overseeing cross-functional teams

Applying a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Lens: Ensure the team is applying DEI principles to the scope of work, asking at all phases: “What can we be doing to build more equitable processes and achieve more equitable outcomes?”

Relationship Management: Develop, manage, and grow relationships with clients. The Director must have the emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills necessary to build long-lasting and close relationships with their clients

Project Team Development: In the context of project work, train project team members and help develop their skills and talent with special focus on creative facilitation, collaborative decision making, and adult learning methods to support our clients

Business Development and Marketing (~15-20%)

  • Partner with business development team to qualify leads and pitch new opportunities with prospective family and individual clients or to advisors of families and individuals
  • Serve as senior lead on proposals, including advising or leading on scope design and pricing and closing the opportunity with the prospect
  • Stay abreast of developments of the field and use this information to hone services and business strategy; represent the firm at select conferences and events

Management and Internal Strategy (~15-20%)

Community of Practice: Partner with the Senior Director of ChangeWorks to build and manage community of practice for ChangeWorks project team members

Internal Strategy & Team Objectives: Contribute to the development, implementation, and management of key components of the team and firm’s strategic plan, annual objectives, and key business performance metrics

General Management & Mentorship: Contribute to professional growth and satisfaction of junior staff in concert with the Senior Director of ChangeWorks work by providing direction, support, guidance and mentorship on project work and by promoting firm culture that centers DEI; Develop and share relevant skills and issue-area expertise

To be successful in this role you’ll need:

  • Work experience in relevant field (management consulting, professional services, philanthropy, public policy, nonprofit management, corporate social responsibility, etc.) with emphasis on experience assessing and making recommendations on people practices, organizational systems, or structures for greater effectiveness
  • At least 10 years of professional experience with steadily increasing job responsibility and management experience; experience with operations development, team management, or human resources within an organization preferred
  • Experience in philanthropy, nonprofit management, business and/or organizational development consulting experience preferred
  • Proven ability to work with diverse audiences and stakeholders, facilitate meetings and conversations, and bring groups to decisions with a goal of excellent client service
  • Ability to manage and lead a complex project, to oversee and delegate to team members, and to meet deadlines, while creating a positive and inclusive team environment
  • Strong research, writing, and analytical skills with an understanding of how to guide teams in gathering, analyzing, and synthesizing diverse information from written documents and interviews
  • Prior consulting experience and knowledge of the process for developing strong client deliverables preferred
  • Excellent communication skills, including strong writing skills and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to balance multiple priorities and projects with flexibility and an open mind
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
