The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity to join its rapidly growing Social Impact Fund as a Portfolio Manager located in the San Francisco Bay or Seattle areas.
In this role, you will be responsible for sourcing and evaluating investment opportunities and then leading the growing AHA’s Social Impact portfolio, with a focus initially on the San Francisco Bay and Seattle markets. Responsible for prospecting and completing due diligence of new investments and making investment recommendations to the Managing Director and Investment Committee; and ensuring investee compliance with AHA’s grant or investment requirements.
- Develop a network to source and recruit new impact investments or grants, with an emphasis on achieving impact at scale. Screen potential investments and review Expression of Interest. Provide the Fund with experienced mentorship on local market conditions and opportunities in assigned location(s).
- Conduct desk and on-site due diligence of potential investments to assess prospects’ social and financial performance, and mission fit with AHA and present potential investments for approval by the Investment Committee.
- Participate in consultations on grants/Investment terms and conditions with the goal of improving impact at scale. Lead active relationships with other investors/foundations of assigned Investment Partners; seek out co-investment opportunities where possible.
- Supervise assigned grants/Investments (both remotely and in-person), including repayments, financial performance, and social performance. In addition, build and cultivate relationships with key ecosystem actors in Seattle, in order to build awareness of the Fund and generate investment opportunities.
- In collaboration with team members, monitor assigned Investments for compliance with Fund policies, covenants and achievement. Support drafting and review of transaction documentation of new Investments with legal department.
- Assist in on-boarding new investments, act as liaison, communicate Fund policy to these Partners and update AHA partners on new developments and/or issues. Resolve issues faced by the Partners and help source TA support.

- Five (5) years validated experience in Grant Making and/or Investing within a private foundation or Investment Firm, or related role
- Three (3) years of technical experience with making grants and/or investing in community-based programs and/or companies focused on either: food insecurity, housing insecurity, education, or economic empowerment/job creation
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to tailor communications to a wide variety of audiences and partners, across multiple cultures
- Strong financial analysis and modeling capabilities
- Ability to network extensively and manage relationships efficiently
- Ability to handle time well and prioritize across exciting tasks
- Ability to travel overnight up to 20%
- Advanced degree in Business, Economics, Public Health or related area
- Three (3) years of experience investing in, or working authoritatively in assigned location (San Francisco Bay area or Seattle)
- Proficient in office software and adept at learning and using technology platforms
