About the Job

The GIIN seeks a Director of Finance and Operations to provide strategic leadership, oversight, and planning for all fiscal, HR, technology, legal, and facilities functions of the GIIN. The position is a key part of the eight-person senior management team and reports to the Managing Director. As a decade-old organization, the GIIN is actively maintaining existing operational infrastructure as well as building infrastructure and systems to prepare for the future. A candidate with experience engineering policies, processes, and systems for a growing organization or one in its adolescence is preferred. The Director is also expected to drive strategic visioning and oversee execution to position the GIIN to be financially sustainable, retain key talent, and develop the technological infrastructure to power our programmatic ambitions.

ABOUT GIIN’S ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE
The GIIN culture is collaborative, ambitious, intellectually curious, and friendly. Employees take pride in their own high standards of quality. An approach to HR that prioritizes professional development and talent cultivation and retention will be a stronger fit for the GIIN’s culture than an orientation that focuses on compliance or authority. The operating budget is approximately 7 million USD; 30-40% typically comes from earned revenue while the remainder comes from grants originating from domestic and foreign government agencies, foundations, and corporations. Experience planning for long-term financial sustainability and exploring business models to support this effort is highly desirable. To date the GIIN has been relatively lucky as compared to many U.S. nonprofits in the era of a pandemic, but experience leading through an economic downturn or planning through financial uncertainty is also highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Governance

  • Supervise, lead, and inspire the Operations team, including a Senior Manager of Technology and Facilities, a Finance Manager, a Human Resources Manager, a Finance Associate, and an Operations Associate.
  • Serve as a member of the GIIN’s Senior Management Team, collaborating with colleagues on issues of organizational importance and driving strategic conversations pertaining to Operational functional areas
  • Prepare financial information for the GIIN’s Board of Directors and Board Finance and Audit Committees
  • Prepare and maintain all records required by law and associated with the GIIN’s 501(c)(3) status

Financial Management

  • Drive strategic discussions and recommendations regarding the organization’s long-term financial sustainability and financial planning
  • Direct budget development and monitoring
  • Oversee cash flow planning and ensure availability of funds as needed
  • Oversee financing strategies and activities
  • Develop financial business plans and forecasts
  • Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures
  • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions
  • Ensure completion of annual audit
  • Supervise day-to-day financial transaction processing (AR/AP)

Human Resources

  • Provide strategic visioning and management of talent management program, including recruiting, retention and professional development
  • Supervise maintenance of personnel records, benefits plans, and payroll
  • Ensure organizational and staff compliance with all local, state, and federal human resource requirements

Technology

  • Supervise and guide execution of technological infrastructure to support CRM and data management needs across the organization
  • Oversee IT, computer network, and security systems; and manage improvements to increase technological capacity

Legal

  • Ensure that the GIIN’s legal interests are protected, in coordination with pro bono legal counsel; review and sign contracts and other legal documents
  • Position the GIIN’s infrastructure to comply with all regulation surrounding personal information, such as GDPR

Systems & Facilities Management

  • Oversee office space, equipment, and supplies needed for programs and services

Qualifications

  • 15 or more years of experience in roles of increasing responsibility in managing the finance and administration of organizations similar to GIIN in terms of size, scope, and complexity, ideally in the nonprofit sector, including budget and resource development, audit, compliance, legal, HR and systems
  • Bold, visionary, and wide-ranging in thinking, with a willingness and ability to diplomatically challenge conventional wisdom when breakthroughs are needed
  • A strong communicator with the ability to build consensus and drive decision-making, with an orientation towards collaboration
  • Decisive and willing to take calculated risks when needed to get things done
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities, creating efficiencies, and guiding investment in programs, people, and systems
  • Extremely well-organized, detail-oriented, and analytical
  • Impeccable ability to execute quickly and accurately
  • A track record of developing solutions proactively
  • Proven effectiveness managing talent
  • Technologically savvy
  • Proven experience supervising the Finance and HR functions of an organization
  • Exceptionally strategic in terms of both the big picture and the little, quirky details ofcomplicated issues
  • Clear, direct, thoughtful, and empathetic in communications with all people
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in business administration, or another similar/related/relevant discipline, is preferred

LOCATION: Full-time role in a flexible, entrepreneurial culture. This position will be based in our New York City office.

COMPENSATION: Competitive compensation, commensurate with experience.
