This position represents a great opportunity for a professional interested in helping promote racial equity through community finance. The Community Development Finance Institutions (CDFI) industry has organized billions of dollars around the insight that access to finance is necessary to create opportunity. This industry has an opportunity to reduce racial inequity more directly by investing with greater intention in ways that best support organizations whose work improves racial equity outcomes. The position will support that work and will help to coordinate and manage NFF’s organization-wide efforts to more consistently and deeply live our value of Equity in Action.
This work will:
- Deepen awareness of and insights about racial equity dynamics and build organizational structure to address them.
- Support the Financial Services team to develop new insights, tools, approaches for embedding racial equity in our investment practice.
- Lead a grant-funded partnership with CDFI peer, Capital Impact Partners, to identify ways to use the tools that CDFIs have to advance racial equity.
- Engage broader CDFI peers in learning and training.
- Build links between CDFI sector and broader national movements for racial equity.
- Explore partnerships with CDFI allies to advance concepts of racial equity in community and economic development.
The Senior Associate, Equity in Action is a grant-funded position for a duration of 24 months, though a successful applicant will contribute to raising additional funding during this time to enable the position to continue after the end of 2021. Seventy percent of this role is focused on supporting activities related to the initial health-focused partnership with our Financial Services practice and 30% will more broadly advance NFF’s enterprise-wide Equity in Action work. In alignment with the strategic plan we are developing now, this will include supporting NFF team members to understand racial equity dynamics better and to become more effective at advancing racial equity internally and in their work, supporting organization-wide efforts to form deep partnerships with select organizations from outside the community finance field who are advancing racial equity, and helping to communicate externally the importance of racial equity considerations in harnessing the potential of the community finance movement.
This position will be based in NFF’s New York headquarters and will report to the CEO with a dotted line to the Managing Director, Financial Services.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Support Financial Services team to implement grant-funded partnership on racial equity – 70%
- Support design of 2.5-year workplan of trainings, research, and CDFI and other ally outreach
- Facilitate implementation of partnership work plan
- Lead in identification, recruitment, scoping and management of research and training consultants
- Manage day-to-day aspects of partnership with Capital Impact Partners
- Manage grant administration including timely narrative and financial reporting
- Speak and write publicly about this work
- Develop follow-on plan for continuing this work and support efforts to secure funding to implement it
Help NFF deepen our commitment to Equity in Action – 30%
- Serve as a point person for Equity in Action at NFF, keeping a pulse on staff experience related to this work
- Lead in convening relevant discussions and other ways to normalize Equity in Action at NFF (e.g., curating regular Equity in Action discussions across the national team)
- Serve as a resource to other NFF colleagues developing client services or communications related to Equity in Action work
- Serve as a point person to external partners working with NFF to improve our Equity in Action work
- Identify and help secure grant funding to expand and maintain this work at NFF
- Help identify and build external partnerships that harness NFF’s capabilities to improve the ability of other organizations to advance racial equity
Essential Requirements for Education and/or Experience:
- Minimum 10 years' experience in the area of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, or related field
- Ability to manage effectively up, down and across and organization with competing interests and interpretations
- Experienced facilitator of content on identity, power, privilege, equity & justice
- Experience with implementing programs related to racial injustice on the community level – organizing, advocating, and delivering
- Highly collaborative style in developing and implementing strategies across various internal and external constituencies
- Professional level project management knowledge to successfully create and/or maintain complex tasks, processes, and work plans
- Advanced organizational experience and project management skills with an ability to manage multiple priorities
- Ability to manage multiple stakeholders at various levels of leadership and gain trust and buy-in
- Strong interpersonal skills, including strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills
- Deeply curious about diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Has a deep understanding of the cultural implications and history of equity work and feels comfortable working in uncomfortable/challenging environments
- Self-starter with experience driving efforts for transformational change; innovative and willing to be disruptive to challenge the status quo
- Action-oriented, solution driven, with a high level of personal and professional integrity and trustworthiness, along with a strong work ethic
- Highly empathetic and self-aware
Specialized Knowledge/Beneficial Skills and Experience:
- CDFI or Financial Services experience
- Public speaking and presentation skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Bilingual fluent in English and Spanish is a plus but not required
