About the Job

Key responsibilities:

  • Conduct market study in Sub-Saharan Africa and analyze potential for impact investing targeting sustainable agriculture, deforestation-free agricultural value chains, conservation and forest landscape restoration (FLR)
  • Analyze target countries’ financial sector quality, regulatory environment (e.g. for cross-border investing) and its capacity to absorb earmarked “green” credit lines
  • Analyze role of SMEs, cooperatives and companies in agricultural value chains, their bankability, and the potential for impact investing, i.e. to support the transformation towards resource efficient production and adaptation to ecological risks such as climate change induced negative effects
  • Perform analysis of ecological risks in the agricultural and forestry value chains and potential for transition towards ecologically sustainable production
  • Provide an overview of relevant voluntary sustainability standards for agricultural products, e.g. level of market penetration
  • Map relevant donor initiatives or other IFI/DFI/impact investing activities in (sustainable) agriculture, (deforestation-free) agricultural value-chains and FLR
  • Assess the potential for Technical Assistance interventions with relevant partners and stakeholders including the identification of areas of intervention
  • Develop an investment strategy for Sub-Saharan Africa to promote sustainable agricultural practices/FLR
  • Coordinate closely with the respective teams of Finance in Motion during the study phase

Qualifications

What we expect:

  • Master's degree in economics, agricultural/forestry science, banking, development finance, or a related field
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in the management of consultant and research projects including work experience in Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Expertise in financial sectors and/or agricultural and forestry value chains in Africa
  • Expertise in voluntary sustainability standards would be considered an asset
  • Familiarity with Forest Landscape Restoration (and related concepts) and respective international donor programs (e.g. AFR100) would be an asset
  • Excellent analytical and project management skills
  • Team player with strong communication and interpersonal skills, also in multicultural contexts
  • Excellent knowledge of English and/or French, both written and oral
  • International travel required
