About the Job

The Communications Associate plays a pivotal role in deploying Heron’s non-financial capital in support of its mission and its four strategic pillars. Reporting to the Vice President, Integrated Capitals, he/she leads Heron’s knowledge dissemination efforts, works closely with the President to manage strategic messaging, and stewards Heron’s public-facing position. In addition, the Communications Associate will be responsible for day-to-day management of Heron’s suite of communication tools.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Strategic Communications (10%)
• Design (and update quarterly) a strategic communications plan that identifies influential channels that relate to Heron’s strategic pillars
• Manage special media projects on behalf of the foundation

Content Development and Dissemination (40%)
• Design and steward editorial schedules for Heron as they relate to Heron’s strategic priorities
• Work with other members of Heron’s staff to identify, produce, and disseminate content about Heron’s work (including but not limited to articles, blogs, podcasts, interviews, and other forms of media)
• Serve as the primary editorial professional for content generated by Heron staff
• Create and update mailing lists that can be used to disseminate Heron’s content to strategically relevant communities

Communication Support for the President and Staff (20%)
• Provide research, analysis, and communication support for the President and Vice Presidents
• Advise the President on high-impact market-facing interactions
• Generate talking points and relevant materials to ensure that the president, staff, and board are well prepared for interviews and other speaking engagements
• Support the creation of presentations and written materials for Heron’s boards (including but not limited to the Board of Directors, Investment Committee, and advisory boards) 

Management of Heron’s Market-Facing Messaging (20%)
• Facilitate internal and external communication on behalf of Heron
• Update Heron’s website as appropriate
• Leverage Heron’s social media outlets (including but not limited to Twitter, YouTube, etc.) with support from Heron’s staff as appropriate
• Track a database of “Heron Mentions” that includes all market-facing references to Heron

Vendor Management (10%)
• Manage Heron’s communications-related vendors (including but not limited to press relations professionals, web developers, and freelancers)


• Robust written and verbal communication skills
• Strong project management and prioritization skills (including the ability to create, adhere to, and help others manage deadlines)
• Relevant technical training, including experience with Content Management Systems (CMSs) and new media platforms
• Strong copy-editing skills and an attention to detail
• Excellent strategic thinking and analytical skills, with the ability to efficiently synthesize qualitative and quantitative data Exceptional relationship-building skills, with the ability to develop productive working relationships and make connections across a diverse spectrum of stakeholders
• Ability to thrive in a demanding environment and effectively adapt to shifting priorities
