The Portfolio team is responsible for finding, vetting, and managing investments in game-changing social enterprises that serve the poor in our four portfolio sectors: health, energy, agriculture, and education. The Portfolio team also provides management support to existing companies in our portfolio through tracking key performance metrics and hands-on relationship management.

Responsibilities

The Summer Associate will help the Pakistan Portfolio team research focus sub-sectors, evaluate new investment opportunities, support high-potential investments, and conduct due diligence on existing opportunities as they arise. The Associate will be able to use his or her business skills in evaluating the growth and return potential of social enterprises from both a financial and social impact perspective, gaining practical insights into a new approach in social investing.

More specifically, you may have the opportunity to:

  • Formulate a systematic strategy for effectively engaging with local incubators and accelerators to develop a robust pipeline for our early stage investing
  • Conduct research into new investment opportunities for Acumen’s Portfolio
  • Conduct due diligence on potential investments
  • Prepare Investment documentation and reports for internal and/or external use
  • Look for potential resources to support current portfolio companies’ operations and impact
  • Prepare a strategy report on social impact investments in Pakistan
  • Support Pakistan Portfolio teams in day to day operations

Qualifications

Qualifications & Characteristics

Minimum qualifications:

  • First year MBA or equivalent candidate (ideally with an Economics/Finance background)
  • Proven experience in financial analysis and modeling; strong understanding of finance fundamentals and our investing model
  • Strong ability to take initiative with research and analysis and produce valuable results in conditions of uncertainty
  • Capability to present investment ideas in memoranda to senior management and advisors

The ideal candidate will also meet the following criteria:

  • Familiarity with the social enterprise sector
  • Academic training or work experience focused on early stage investing, entrepreneurship and/or startups
  • Commitment to, and enthusiasm for, the organization’s mission and business model, and respect for our core values: generosity, accountability, humility, audacity, listening, leadership, integrity, respect
  • Solid operational skills, including ability to work and deliver projects independently, proactively and under pressure
  • Exceptional relationship and interpersonal skills: courtesy, tact, patience and strong team orientation
  • Strong communication skills and ability to be a “storyteller” of our work
  • Moral Imagination: The humility to see the world as it is, and the audacity to imagine the world as it could be. It also includes but is not limited to the following:
    o Displaying high level of empathy in all relationships and encounters
    o Possessing deep self-awareness and ability to identify own strengths and weaknesses
    o Actively listening and focusing on hearing what others are saying

Compensation
PKR 25,000 per month for up to 3 months
